Purpose

This Audio/Visual Home Study course is being offered from the 2024 Preventing Relapse Symposium, designed for anyone interested in learning more about Relapse Prevention methods including professional treatment such as counselors, therapists, case managers, and program executives, as well as individuals in personal recovery with the goals of enhancing clinical techniques across all levels of care with proven and practical applications of The Gorski-CENAPS Model of Recovery and Relapse Prevention. It affords you the opportunity of completing the course at your own pace. The cost of this course is $39.00. Participants will earn 1.5 Continuing Education credit hours upon successful completion of this 90-minute course.

  3. Complete the Continuing Education Test by answering the questions included at the end of the course.
  4. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of completion (emailed and available through your account) with your Continuing Education credits/clock hours.

Course Description

This course focuses on implementing effective relapse prevention strategies tailored to justice-involved clients, utilizing the comprehensive CENAPS model. Participants will explore suggested approaches and interventions designed to address the unique challenges faced by individuals within the criminal justice system.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this homestudy course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand how to communicate effectively with clients who may struggle to recognize the need for treatment during both stable periods and times when their symptoms worsen.

  • Learn about anosognosia, a condition where individuals may not realize they have a mental illness, and how it can affect their willingness to participate in treatment and explore ways to address this challenge.

  • Learn practical treatment techniques to improve outcomes and help clients feel more confident and motivated to stick to their recovery plans, even when they're struggling.

  • Explore the relationship between mental illness and substance use and discover ways to create comprehensive treatment plans that address both issues.

  • Identify common warning signs that someone might be at risk of relapse and discuss strategies for intervening early to prevent setbacks.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of relapse and how to help clients manage it using proven techniques from relapse prevention therapy, even during times of stability or when symptoms are worsening.

Instructor Leonardo Martinez

Leonardo Martinez, MSW, LCSW, CADCII, ACRPS Mr. Martinez grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a United States Marine Corps veteran. Through his own personal experiences of being raised in a family affected by alcoholism and his own battle with addiction, Leo found his passion as a substance abuse counselor in the field of addiction treatment. This career opened a door to curiosity on how the human mind is affected by disease and illness and his knowledge base grew to include the treatment of thought and mood disorders. His 11-year career has included work in several countries and with several underserved populations that include people experiencing homelessness, people living with mental illness, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. He has also worked in the community as a family advocate with NAMI and was instrumental in the launching of Laura’s Law Assertive Community Treatment in Contra Costa County, CA. He was recognized in 2016 as part of the “People that Make a Difference” award recipients for his work with launching free SUD counseling services for homeless shelters in California. Currently, Leo is the Clinical Director for JRV Recovery, Inc. in Mission Viejo, CA. He also works with Lionrock Recovery where he has been providing telehealth services since 2016. He has also had the honor of helping to create Lionrock’s CommUnity – an alternative to 12-step programs that are available fully online. Leo is Salvadoran-American and speaks Spanish. He holds a master’s degree in social work from California State University, East Bay and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California. He is also a certified substance abuse counselor through CCAPP and a certified trainer for the Gorski-CENAPS Corp. Leo is the proud father of 3 young children, a loving husband to his wife, and is crazy about his Cavapoo Butchie Man.
