Course Description

The landscape of chronic pain treatment continues to change as we wean ourselves off the traditional bio-medical approach that emphasizes harmful opioid-based pain management interventions. In this presentation you will learn the unique challenges and obstacles that face chronic pain patients suffering with their pain and coexisting disorders, including medication misuse abuse or addiction. By understanding these unique challenges, you will discover that it requires an integrated, collaborative, and concurrent team approach to achieve successful treatment outcomes.

Join chronic pain management international expert, Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead, for this dynamic interactive presentation. You will obtain the proper understanding, skills, and treatment techniques you need to address the neurobiological psychological/emotional, social, and Spiritual aspects of chronic pain when potentially addictive medications are no longer a viable option. You will learn about Dr. Grinstead’s evidence-based Addiction-Free Pain Management® Manualized Treatment System and how to develop strategic treatment plans for positive treatment outcomes.

By attending this presentation, you will discover how common coexisting disorders and family dynamics can also sabotage treatment – and what to do about it. You will learn how to develop a synergistic treatment plan incorporating the mind, body, and spirit for healing as well as strategies to empower clients to be proactive in their healing process.  This course also draws from the 2018 American Society of Addiction Medicine Handbook: Pain and Addiction – including Dr. Grinstead’s Chapter: Self-directed Non-Pharmacological Management of Chronic Pain. By the end of the presentation, you will have a new confidence in helping people and their families suffering with chronic pain and coexisting disorders including substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this homestudy course, the participant will be able to:

  • Investigate two or more reasons why the biomedical approach alone may be ineffective for the low outcome subset of chronic pain clients with coexisting disorders.

  • Differentiate between the physiological and psychological/emotional pain symptoms and have appropriate strategic management strategies for both types.

  • Develop a treatment plan that helps clients let go of suffering and adequately addresses the psychological/emotional symptoms of their chronic pain.

  • Analyze the needs of clients as they explore the correlation of increased stress and worsening levels of pain and how to develop appropriate relaxation response skills to reduce their levels of stress and the perception of their pain.

  • Understand the importance of developing and collecting strategic outcome measures, before during, and post treatment to demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment.
