Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this homestudy course, the participant will be able to:

  • Learn the five steps of the Denial Management Interactional Process designed to identify and manage denial in here-and-now interactions with clients.

  • Be able to assist their clients in directly identify and manage the twelve most common denial patterns that can sabotage the treatment process and quality of life.

  • Look at denial differently by normalizing and “de-pathologizing” this human defense mechanism to explain it to the clients they serve.

Course Description

This course will help you be able to deal more effectively with clients exhibiting denial and treatment resistance.  Upon completing, you will be able to understand the philosophy of resistance and denial as well as learning how to effectively intervene and disrupt your clients’ self-defeating patterns of behavior. Using terms like the “inner saboteur” or "self-defeating defenses" is an important part of helping our clients recognize, normalize, de-pathologize and manage their denial.

One important goal of this session is to educate, normalize and de-pathologize denial so we can help our clients recognize that it is a normal part of being human.  You will learn how to identify and managing your own personal denial patterns to be more effective helping their clients see theirs.  You will be encouraged to explore your own personal defenses and how they developed to be more effective with the clients you serve. Special emphasis will be placed on building a collaborative relationship with clients.
